FAQ for SMART+

Bluetooth Products

SMART+ Bluetooth Products

1. GENERAL SMART+ BLUETOOTH INFORMATION

Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard for exchanging data using the 2.4 GHz frequency band. It is natively supported by most common handheld devices including smartphones and tablets. This allows us to integrate our advanced lighting solutions of the SMART+ Bluetooth portfolio in a compatible smart home system without the need for extra hardware like gateways or bridges.

With our SMART+ Bluetooth portfolio we offer the possibility to use either Bluetooth Low Energy (4.0) in combination with Apple HomeKit or Bluetooth Mesh (5.0) in combination with the LEDVANCE SMART+ app.

Bluetooth Low Energy is designed for very low power operation while maintaining a communication range similar to the standard version of Bluetooth. For the Apple HomeKit system Bluetooth Low Energy is implemented with a point-to-point network topology. This enables the creation of small-scaled smart home systems using SMART+ Bluetooth products and direct 1-to-1 communication between your smartphone or tablet and a few SMART+ Bluetooth products at a time.

Bluetooth Mesh is based on the Bluetooth Low Energy standard and combines the low power consumption and communication range of Bluetooth Low Energy with a many-to-many network topology. This many-to-many network topology enables large-scale communication networks in which connected SMART+ Bluetooth products repeat the Bluetooth signal and therefore extend the network reach. SMART+ uses the Bluetooth Mesh technology in combination with the LEDVANCE SMART+ app.

LEDVANCE offers a broad range of Bluetooth based products. These SMART+ Bluetooth products can either be used with an iOS based system in combination with Apple HomeKit or with an iOS or Android based system in combination with the LEDVANCE SMART+ app. The SMART+ Bluetooth products are easy to recognize by a Bluetooth label on the packaging or by the imprint “Works with Apple HomeKit”. No matter in which of these two ways your SMART+ Bluetooth product is labelled, it is always possible to update the firmware of your SMART+ Bluetooth device from Apple HomeKit (Bluetooth Low Energy) compatible firmware to LEDVANCE SMART+ app (Bluetooth Mesh) compatible firmware or the other way around.

1.3.1. HOW CAN I SWITCH BETWEEN APPLE HOMEKIT AND LEDVANCE SMART+ APP COMPATIBLE FIRMWARE?

As described in question 1.2 (SMART+ BLUETOOTH PORTFOLIO) there are two different firmware versions available for SMART+ Bluetooth products. One is for the use in Apple Home app and one for the LEDVANCE SMART+ app. If you want to change between those two apps you need to switch the firmware as described below.

The standard delivery firmware of every SMART+ Bluetooth product is the Apple HomeKit (Bluetooth Low Energy) firmware. SMART+ Products which have already been set to LEDVANCE SMART+ app compatible firmware will not appear in Apple Home app, when searching for devices.

Also be aware that it is not possible to switch between SMART+ Bluetooth and SMART+ Zigbee firmware.

There are two directions you can switch to:

a) Switch from Apple HomeKit compatible firmware to LEDVANCE SMART+ app compatible firmware

1. Install the LEDVANCE SMART+ app on your smartphone or tablet (Android 6.0 or higher / iOS 10or higher). You will need to create an account by entering an email address and selecting a password.

2. Start the pairing process in the LEDVANCE SMART+ app. While adding your SMART+ Bluetooth products, they will be automatically updated to LEDVANCE SMART+ app (Bluetooth Mesh) compatible firmware. Alternatively, you can update them to Bluetooth Mesh firmware in the firmware update section of the LEDVANCE SMART+ app.

3. For further information how to pair products see FAQ section 2 (LEDVANCE SMART+ App).

b) Switch from LEDVANCE SMART+ app compatible firmware to Apple HomeKit compatible firmware

1. Delete your SMART+ Bluetooth products in the LEDVANCE SMART+ app (see FAQ section 2 (LEDVANCE SMART+ app)) or reset them to factory setting (see the appropriate instructions for your SMART+ Bluetooth product below).

2. If not already installed, download and open the LEDVANCE SMART+ app on your iOS smartphone or tablet (iOS 10 or higher).

3. Navigate to the firmware update section of the LEDVANCE SMART+ app.

4. Click on the ‘Change to HomeKit’ button of the device that you want to update to Apple HomeKit compatible firmware and confirm your selection by pressing the ‘OK’ button.

5. The update will be performed automatically. After the update is done, your SMART+ Bluetooth product is ready to be added to your Apple HomeKit system.

1.3.2. HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF MY SMART+ PRODUCT IS A BLUETOOTH PRODUCT, EVEN IF I LOST THE PACKAGING?

Besides the Bluetooth or HomeKit labelled packaging every SMART+ Bluetooth product has an eight-digit numeric code on its surface. This code has the formatting ‘XXX-XX-XXX’ and is usually located next to a QR code or on the back of the SMART+ Bluetooth product.

1.3.3. IS IT POSSIBLE TO USE THE SMART+ BLUETOOTH MESH FUNCTIONALTY IN COMBINATION WITH APPLE DEVICES?
